The Tesla Model X is an all electric full-sized crossover SUV whose production began in late 2015. It shares the same platform as the Model S electric car built by Tesla, as well as 30% of the same parts, and weighs roughly 5,300 pounds.
The Model X has a choice of two lithium-ion battery packs, rated at either 75 or 90 kW-h – the same choices that are available on the Model S.
The highest performance version of the model P90D will reach 60 mph from a standstill in only 3.2 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds. That is faster than any current SUVs and many sports cars.
The all-wheel drive system uses two motors in this SUV with one mounted in the front and one in the rear, unlike conventional AWD systems using a single power source.
The Model X has an estimated 250-257 miles listed as the EPA rated range on one charge. This is of course when you are not making full use of the two 259 horsepower motors, or one 259 and one 503 hp which is available on the performance model. Additionally, with an optional tow bar, the Model X has a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds.
The rear doors of this seven seater are called falcon-wing doors. Similar to the gull-wing doors found on some older exotics, they open upwards. The difference is that the double hinged falcon-wing doors will keep the leading outside edge of the door tucked closely to the SUV’s body in order to allow for use in normal parking conditions.
Tesla claims the doors make access easier for up to seven passengers in three rows of seating and even has a trunk in the front and the rear. The company developed an ultrasonic sensor that can see through metal to keep the falcon-wing doors from hitting nearby objects while opening or closing.
Tesla claims the first true HEPA filter in a car, with medical grade cabin air cleanliness comparable to that of a hospital operating room. When the car operates at maximum capability (enabled with a “Bioweapon Defense Mode” button), Tesla claims that no viruses, bacteria or spores can be detected in the cabin.
According to Tesla founder Elon Musk, it is the safest SUV in terms of frontal and side impact crashes, and more than twice as safe as the next closest SUV in rollover tests. Standard radar-based AEB and ultrasonic-based side collision avoidance systems are utilized to steer occupants away from a side collision.
Pricing for the standard production Model X starts around $80,000 while the Signature edition varies between $132,000 and $144,000.
There are a few known issues that Tesla is working on. In early April, there was a recall on the Model X due to safety concerns. During collision testing, it was found that the third-row seats would unlatch and fold over to the second row. Tesla urged customers to avoid using the third row until it has been repaired.
The falcon-wing doors sometimes do not open or do not latch when closed and occasionally the windows will not open or close all the way.
